Humble Beginnings

As well as sharing stories, I want to create a blog to help other writers, practically and inspirationally.  I am by no means an expert in the matter—this is beginnings most humble—but that puts me in a fantastic position to share what I’ve learned about writing.  I hope in some small way, by sharing my mistakes and successes, other writers will find solace in their own writing adventure.

I thought it would be fitting to write my first ‘Inspirational Stuff’ post, recalling the time I decided to become a writer.  It all started something like this…

About two years ago, I decided it was finally time to embark on my dream of becoming a novelist.  But more than having something in print, I wanted to learn how to tell a great story.  I remember reading, on some webpage or another, that “the only way you’re going to get better at writing is to write,” so that’s what I did, and it felt great!  But I soon realised it was going to be much harder than punching out word, after word, after word.

So, I started again, with a question:  What does it take to become a novelist?

I now have another question:  What are the magic ingredients of a great children’s novel?

These two questions may change over time, but for now they drive my learning of storytelling, which I hope to share with you here.  So, writers and storytellers, this is my invitation to you, to learn from my mistakes and to share your learning and love of writing, here in the Dream Shed.
